My mother’s mother was needlessly cruel,

mean, cunning, spiteful.

My mother’s mother was selfish and cold, distant,

dangling love and approval only to pull it away.

My mother’s mother is long gone,

but the suffering she caused remains.

My mother named me for my mother’s mother,

and she says I cause her pain.
